CELEBRATION
Over the past two weeks, I had the privilege of being part of a Mindful Photography Workshop for young mothers in Kibera. This was a collaborative initiative between Uweza and Saskia Keeley, award winning photographer and documentarian.
Alongside her, the workshop was facilitated by young talented Kenyan documentary photographers, Iddah, Kevin Ochieng, and Jimmy Furahaa, who generously shared their skills and knowledge with us!!
Through a blend of indoor sessions (where the women were introduced to the camera and the concepts of mindfulness, intention, and awareness), photowalks within the neighborhood, and reflective image reviews, CELEBRATION was a constant.💛
This manifested not only in the moments captured, but also in the shared laughter, the openness, and the beauty of learning together while engaging with the community. Truly, the entire exercise proved to be therapeutic and healing by simply documenting every day joys that often go overlooked.
My personal highlights were documenting the magnificent Eid celebrations and hearing from one of Kibera’s veteran photographer, Mzee Adam….Very much excited to share glimpses from my own lens during the photowalks!💃🏾
For me, the workshop was a new form of creativity through photography; a practice I have often shied away from exploring fully. Soooo my film-oriented self found a front-row seat in the classroom and I LOVED every bit of it!!
I’m grateful to have been among such incredible creatives, and feeling inspired to keep exploring, growing, and seeing where this craft takes me…my heart is full❣️
Hope Nabalayo
